Questions:
Who we are and what services we offer
We are a group of parents, families, friends, and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, who are committed to giving support to each other as we discover and understand more about being human. Our purpose is to help change attitudes and to create an environment of understanding so that our gay family members and friends can live with dignity and respect. We accomplish this mission through support, education, and advocacy.
We started as a small group of concerned straight and gay people meeting informally during the early 1980s. We currently have about 250 members in the greater Boston area. We represent a full range of places on our journeys to deal with homo/bi/trans/ phobia - on personal as well as political levels. A few of us have been members since the early days and have made great progress in accepting homosexuality in our children, family members, or ourselves. Some of us have only recently discovered that our child or someone else we love is gay. Still others of us are struggling with coming out to parents or coworkers. All of us had a first PFLAG meeting.
We meet monthly at several locations in the metropolitan Boston area. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Along with parents and GLBTQ people, these meetings also include allies, children, spouses, grandparents, and siblings. In these meetings, we seek and give support in small, safe, and confidential groups. PFLAG literature is available, and many local groups have free lending libraries. Refreshments are served.
Our members engage in many outreach endeavors. Some of us work with Safe Schools and accept speaking engagements from schools, religious organizations, and civic groups.
Many of us participate in the Massachusetts Safe Schools Program. In this project we work with high school Gay/Straight Alliances and conduct workshops for teachers and students, and design and distribute literature. We provide speakers for student and parent events, and community forums -- to deal with homophobia and address ways to ensure that all people are safe and welcome in their communities.
Additionally, each Spring, Greater Boston PFLAG's Elsie Frank Scholarship Program awards $10,000 in scholarships to youth who enroll in a 2 year, 4 year or vocational/technical school.
The Safe Schools Project was initially funded by the Department of Education, in conjunction with the Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth. It is now totally funded through donations to Greater Boston PFLAG, and from our fund raising events. It is now funded through private donations, grants and our fund raising events.
Some of us volunteer on various Committees and some of us sit on the Board. We take to the streets to spread our message. We have participated in the Gay/Straight Youth Pride March, the only event of its kind in the nation, since the first one was held in 1995. We march every year in Boston's annual Gay Pride Parade, and our contingent numbered over 50 last June.
All members receive our newsletter, can attend and vote at our annual meeting and receive e-mails of upcoming events, news and requests for action. Membership fees are $30.00 for individuals and $40.00 for households.
We are affiliated with National PFLAG. Fifteen dollars of each local membership goes to the national office to support (a) the development of publications, (b) networking and cooperative efforts with other human/civil rights organizations, (c) an annual conference, and (d) regional directors and national staff to serve local chapters.
Greater Boston PFLAG members also receive the national newsletter - PFLAGPole.
