LGBTQ+ History Books

It’s almost the end of #LGBTHistoryMonth but we’ve got some books to keep you going till October 2023! Our GBPFLAG Is Reading book this month is for tweens and teens, but good for adults too! https://gbpflag.org/gbpflag-is-reading/pride-the-celebration-and-the-struggle/

Gay New York by George Chauncey is a fascinating look at the evolution of mostly working-class gay male identity in New York City in the early 1900s - it’s a bit more academic in tone but very readable https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/gay-new-york-george-chauncey/1111985521

Gender Outlaws: The Next Generation edited by Kate Bornstein and S. Bear Bergman is a great collection of essays, stories, etc. It’s a bit less history-focused but brings a great variety of perspectives! https://www.amazon.com/Gender-Outlaws-Generation-Kate-Bornstein/dp/1580053084

Transgender History by Susan Striker is a great overview of the history of the trans movement, focusing on 20th century America https://www.amazon.com/Transgender-History-second-Todays-Revolution/dp/158005689X/

All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson is a memoir about growing up as a queer Black man and the way those identities intersect - this one is good for older teens who can handle heavy subjects too! https://www.amazon.com/All-Boys-Arent-Blue-Memoir-Manifesto/dp/0374312710

Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker and Jules Scheele is more of a history of queer theory than LGBTQ+ history per se, but it’s a very approachable intro to how people thought about LGBTQ+ folk thru time https://www.amazon.com/Queer-Graphic-Dr-Meg-John-Barker/dp/1785780719
