Bathe the Cat

written by Alice B. McGinty and illustrated by David Roberts

About this series: Jules (they/he) reads a lot of LGBTQ+ books in their spare time and is telling us about a few of their favorite ones for kids. Jules knows many preschoolers who love this month’s book. Their nephew wanted to hear it read six times the night he got it as a present!

Age range: picture book/preschool & early elementary

Synopsis: Grandma Marge is coming soon and the house is a mess! We’ve got to clean up: vacuum the rug, mow the lawn, feed the baby, and bathe the cat. The cat hears that and mixes up the chore list, so now we’ve got to do things like feed the floor and sweep the dishes. And it just keeps getting sillier and sillier!

What I love about this book: I love that this book features a family with two dads, but it’s not about a family with two dads. It’s great for all kids, whether they come from a family with the stereotypical mom and dad or not, to see a variety of family structures presented as normal. And the book is written with a great rhythm - it’s a very fun book to read aloud!

What kids will love about this book: This book was really written to be read aloud - it sounds great! And kids love how silly it is, too!

Where to get the book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound | Minuteman Libraries
