Julián is a Mermaid

by Jessica Love

About this series: Jules reads a lot of LGBTQ+ books in their spare time and is telling us about a few of their favorite ones for kids. The first book they’re telling us about is Julián is a Mermaid, loved by multiple 3-year-olds of their acquaintance!

Age range: picture book (very little text, so it’s accessible to quite young kids)

Synopsis: On the way home from the pool, Julián and his Abuela see some women dressed as mermaids on the subway, and when they get home, he decides to dress as one too.

What I love about this book: I was worried that Julián’s Abuela would be mad about his gender nonconformity, but she wasn’t at all! I love that he was affirmed for being himself.

What kids will love about this book: There are a lot of great illustrations - I’ve read it to lots of young children - and it is a fan favorite!

Where to get the book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | IndieBound | Minuteman Libraries
